IN CHAPEL THIS MORNING

Rev Susan acknowledged that most of us long for an easy life without any curveballs. We have a picture of God that says that if God does not give us an easy life, He does not love us! So often this fake picture of God comes from us reading Scripture out of context. Using Jeremiah 29:11, Rev gave us the context of this verse which was written in a letter from Jeremiah to surviving exiles in Babylon... She reminded us that Jesus Himself did not have an easy life, and like him, our pain and suffering will also end, if we trust God. Rev closed by giving us an acronym for Hope – “Hold on, pain ends”. DESIGN & TECNOLOGY: DEVELOPING CRITICAL THOUGHT & PROBLEM SOLVING

The Design and Technology curriculum has been reinvented, making it more relevant to new technologies while retaining the hands-on approach and importance of design. The Form 2s and 3s are currently building an electronically-programmable three-wheeled car using a very basic kit. They have to design their vehicle, build the wheels, solder on electrical connections, drill holes to fit components and much more! The physical design throws up many challenges that develop practical thinking skills. The end product will be controlled using an Arduino microcontroller that will allow individual wheel speed control to ensure the vehicle travels straight, can reverse and even spin around. This challenge and requires logical problem solving as well as writing real computer code. Read more online:

ST ANNE’S SCIENTISTS SERIOUS ABOUT ECO-FRIENDLY CHEMISTRY

In a bid to cut down on chemical usage and emission of sulphur dioxide gas, which can cause breathing difficulties, the first Matric Chemistry Practical, Rates of Reaction, was carried out quite differently to previous years. Working on a small scale, the girls were able to use one tenth of the original amount of chemicals. In addition, a “stop bath” was introduced to stop the reaction and further production of SO2 gas. The results were comparable with previous years and in some cases even better data was gathered. Head of Physical Science, Mrs Sandra Schwartz, was exposed to the idea during an online course, Teaching Practical Chemistry, that she recently took as part the continued professional development programme at the College. MAKING BRICKS FROM PLASTIC - MS CAMERON INSPIRES THE ENVIRO CLUB

Ms Philippa Cameron, our very own Librarian and IDL Teacher, spoke to the Enviro Club recently about her recycling efforts at home. Her latest initiative involves making plastic bottle bricks with non-recyclable plastic, like cellophane, chip and sweet packets. She aims to use the bricks to build a wall around her compost heap. She demonstrated just how much plastic can be stuffed into a 2L bottle and just how hard and final indestructible the product is. Her creativity and dedication is inspiring and shows that if we all do our 'small' bit, together, we can make a BIG difference. (Click for images)

IN CHAPEL THIS MORNING

Rev Susan’s message was based on the C.S Lewis quote: “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.” Our Western culture tends to say the opposite – we always want more and it is always about ME. We need to learn that until we give up the idea that happiness is somewhere else, we will never find happiness where we are. 1 Corinthians Ch. 13 talks about the qualities of true love. Rev spoke in particular on love which does not envy and is not boasting. Sometimes we feel less valued than others because we do not have what they have but actually we have so much more than so many and we are valued by God for who we are, not for what we have ... click to read the rest of this story online.
