IN CHAPEL THIS MORNING

Rev Susan empathised with the girls who are feeling “zoomed out” as the end of a busy term approaches. We need to draw our strength for this last week from God and realise that He can help when we are feeling tired. God is as close as the air that we breathe and Rev read several meaningful passages from Scripture, assuring us of God’s presence with us. She reminded us that reading Scripture helps us to focus on God rather than on how exhausted we are feeling. This focus provides a channel for His strength to come through, to renew and recharge us. Rev ended the service by reading the lyrics of a song called “Who am I” by the group Casting Crowns. These lyrics remind us that we are children of God and He will renew our strength so that we “soar on wings like eagles.” Click for lyrics:

IN CHAPEL THIS MORNING

Rev Susan spoke on the need to transform ourselves. As our personal world expands, we need to learn more about others and thus ourselves. The underpinning of our faith is to love God, love our neighbours, and love ourselves. It is important that we learn to love others as we are all made in the image of God. As we become more aware of the needs of those around us, we become social activists, with a desire for all people to be treated fairly. Sometimes when we look within ourselves, we notice that our actions are not consistent with our words. We need to grow in self-awareness, making sure that we are living truthfully, in line with what we believe. We do this by bringing our minds to God and allowing God to change our hearts through the work of His Holy Spirit.

IN CHAPEL THIS MORNING

Rev Susan reminded the girls that Lent is about getting us through to Easter, and in particular Easter Sunday. Statistics show that life expectancy world wide has increased due to medical science. As a result, we experience death less, so we struggle with it, whereas long ago people regarded death as part of life. Jesus experienced death and rose again on the 3rd day. This changes death from 'the end' into a doorway to new life - a place where there is no more tears or pain or darkness. Once death has no power over life, life takes on new meaning and we can find hope after loss.

IN CHAPEL THIS MORNING

Form 5 Pupil, Lerato Moephuli, gave the message in Chapel on Thursday morning. She used the analogy of a skipping rope and likened it to our lives. Young people are at the start of their “skipping ropes” and they need to make time with God a priority. We always make time for friends, social media, sport and other activities, and we waste time stressing over that next test or exam. However, our first priory should be to spend time with God. This time with Him can be anywhere – on Front Lawn, out walking or even in the classroom. Lerato reminded the girls that the majority of their lives still lies ahead of them, and then an eternity with God. She encouraged them to think about how they want to spend the rest of the time here on earth.

IN CHAPEL THIS MORNING

As Christians, we are all agents of transformation in the world. A relationship with Jesus is more than a ticket to heaven - with the help of the Holy Spirit, it is an opportunity to transform the world around us right now. Rev spoke about the visit from representatives of LIV Village who had attended SCA on Friday. LIV is a village established for orphans and vulnerable children and is a visual image of transformation. It is a place where the good news of Jesus is brought to the poor so that children grow up with hope and learn to be transformers themselves. Rev encouraged us to grow in our relationship with Jesus and the Holy Spirit so that we can do God’s work here on earth.

IN CHAPEL THIS MORNING

As part of the Lent series, today Rev Susan looked at Almsgiving - how we look at people with less than ourselves and how we can make a difference. She read the story of Lazarus and the Rich Man which shows the importance of making a difference right now in our community. Sometimes we tend to focus on people who have more than us, wishing we could have the same, instead of focussing on those who have less, and what we can do to make a difference. Rev continued by explaining the difference between the concepts of Charity and Justice. To read the full chapel summary, click on the link.
