Grade 8 girls spend a few days at a school campsite in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands where they take on outdoor activities such as hiking and group challenges. This trip helps the grade bond as a group in their first year of high school and make new friends who may not be in their class or House.
For many girls, “The Great Adventure” in Grade 9 is a landmark event in their school years. Because the trip is a long and challenging undertaking, the girls are put through an extensive preparation programme before they depart.
On The Great Adventure, girls are divided into groups of about 16 and are taken to Spioenkop Dam and Nature Reserve, where they hike, cycle, and canoe specific routes while carrying their own belongings, including tents and food.
The St Lucia Trip is a highlight for the Grade 10s, providing a wonderful setting for girls to broaden the scope of their knowledge. Girls are given a glimpse into vibrant Zulu culture, with the dramatic unfolding of South Africa’s history brought to life. Goegraphers head out into the bush for river, grass, and ecosystem studies, and view the “rainbow RDP Village”. The entire grade benefits from team-building activities – a vital enabler of their interaction as a group.
The Grade 11 girls travel to Tala Game Reserve, where they participate in challenging outdoor activities, facilitated by the experienced Spirit of Adventure team. The camp forms part of the preparation for their leadership roles in Grade 12, and gives the girls the opportunity to assess their abilities and overcome obstacles – both literally and figuratively. Faced with a wholly different set of challenges, these adventures make a deep impression on the grade and the character of every girl.
The Grade 12 girls start their year by attending a number of sessions on leadership skills and development, building on existing knowledge and preparing them for their roles as leaders of the school.
